Hex Wrenches Hex wrenches are available in US or Metric sizes and are often referred to as Allen wrenches, hex keys, or hex head wrenches. The basic design is a L shaped, piece of metal with ends that are six-sided, or hexagonal. By having six large, flat contact areas a properly sized hex wrench can generate better torque and more reliable driving than a flat head or phillips type driver. Using the proper sized wrench is very important, because a wrench that is too small can round or strip the head of the fastener.
